Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

Writing wedding vows from scratch is a difficult and time consuming task. However, it is far more rewarding to everyone that will be at your wedding – especially for your to-be-spouse. The hardest parts are trying to express your feelings in words and finding exactly what to say. What you come up with is completely up to you. There are no rules about writing wedding vows.

If you are having difficultly thinking about exactly what to say, have a one-on-one talk with your to-be-spouse about topics that you are interested in including in your wedding vows. Take notes during this conversation, so you can best recall this information when you have the time to write your wedding vows. Some topics you may want to include in writing your wedding vows are marriage, beliefs, dreams, and expectations.

The best way to start your custom wedding vows is with a short introduction statement about the two of you. A few good starting statements are:

We first met…..
Before I met….my life was…
When I first realized I was in love….
What I love about….is
I look forward to spending my life with….
Once, when…and I were together….
Since, I met…
Both of us share the same….
I have learned to….

Wedding vows are written to declare a public commitment to your partner, not a speech or a private conversation with your partner. When writing your wedding vows remember that the longest they need to be is two to three minutes long. They should exclude any embarrassing, lengthy, or intimate details.

Once finished writing, you should read them out loud to catch any errors or awkward phrasing. Then, go over the vows with your Officiant.
